Phuket is considered to be the jewel of the south and is still the most popular island in Thailand. Koh Samui is an island that is growing rapidly in popularity. Koh Samui is not as 'spoilt' as Phuket. The beaches have soft white sand, crystal clear waters and shopping galore. Arriving in Nathorn, tourists are greeted with a sign that says "Welcome to the land of sun, sea and Singha". Singha is Thailand's national beer and is a favourite of not only locals but people from all over the world.
Chaweng Beach
Chaweng beach is the 'party town' of Koh Samui. For those in search of a quiet, peaceful holiday, Chaweng beach should be avoided. The streets are lined with markets, bars, 'girlie' bars and restaurants. The nightlife is of plenty and action is not lacking. However, on that same token, many holiday-goers stay no-where but Chaweng beach. Visitors to this part of Koh Samui never find themselves bored. From eating and drinking to shopping to watersports, there is always something to do. Although the beach has been built up with markets and the like, the beach is still idyllic and the most visited beach in Koh Samui.
Lamai and Maenam Beaches
Lamai beach is very similar to Chaweng Beach. Maybe not quite as built up, but still lots of action and things to do. Maenam beach is situated next to a hill which contains some magnificant walks and views. The beach however, still has vendors who contantly ask tourists to buy their items. This beach is not quite as built up as Lamai beach and Chaweng beach but still has its fair share of bars, restaurants and souvenir shops.
Full Moon Parties
Koh Samui is famous for its 'Full Moon Parties'. These parties are held on the same beach annually and are a hit with the young back-packer crowd. There is loud music, alcohol and plenty of socialising,
Choeng Mon
Situated a few kilometers north of Chaweng, Choeng Mon is a picture perfect bay. It has isolated beaches lined with greenery. There is a small island nearby that can be reached by swimming. At low tide it is possible to wade through the warm waters to the island. Some of Koh Samui's most luxurious resorts are located in this part.
Tongsai Bay
Tongsai Bay is a resort located in Choeng Mon and has long been a favourite of tourists with the money to afford luxury accommodation. Five star villas are scattered throughout a forested section just behind the beach. The villas are secluded and look over the spectacular beach.
Samui Peninsula Spa and Resort
This resort features Thai-style villas that have their own private pools. Another luxurious resort, it has amazing views of the sea.
For those who are not looking to stay in luxurious accommodation, there is also plenty of more affordable bungalows that have the same spectacular views. Generally, this sort of accommodation is clean and sparing with what it contains.
