It was only a matter of time before the hospitals seized the opportunities to promote their business right at the gateway to the country.
Bumrungrad International, considered to be Bangkok's foremost private hospital, has positioned itself next to the Tourism Authoritiy of Thailand's counter, and provides mainly information and ground support services (a reception centre) for its inbound patients. The stylish, business-class lounge setting puts patients at ease straightaway, then they are whisked away by limousine to their serviced apartments at the hospital, or their very comfortable bedrooms. This introduction certainly makes the patient feel special.
Next week, Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital opens the first medical centre run by a private hospital at the airport. The clinic is situated on the third floor of the passenger terminal complex and is set to provide primary medical treatment to passengers and also staff of Airports of Thailand and people working in and around the airport. An ambulance service will be on 24-hour standby will be able to transport critically ill patients to hospital.
All Bangkok private hospitals rely heavily on patients from abroad, and offer a world-class service at affordable prices. Bumrungrad International Hospital treated approximately 450,000 foreign patients last year, and if you add about 600,000 Thai patients, the total treated is well over one million.
Health tourism is increasing in Thailand, as hospitals offering state of the art medical equipment, accommodation on a par with luxury hotels and highly qualified doctors and surgeons attract high-value tourists who stay longer. Their families can be accommodated with the patient, in hospitals that could be mistaken for hotels, with restaurants from KFC to top-end French and Italian on site. Bumrangrad has plans to invest 3 billion baht over the next 3 years in its new 23-storey building. This will enable it to increase its capacity to 650 beds.
Patients wishing to be treated in any of Bangkok's hospitals can be assured of excellence. I speak from personal experience!
