Thailand's Samui Island's Quiet Beaches

Kho Samui has Butterflies, Monkey Sanctuary and Serene Beaches

Thailand's third largest island has some surprises in store besides the popular beaches of Chaweng and Lamai Samui has a quieter side and many things for the Kids to do.

Kho Samui is blessed with many fine beaches the most popular of which are Chaweng and Lamai Beaches. The night life around both can be a little boisterous with their many open air hostess bars catering mainly to a particular type of tourist. Mercifully, particularly Lamai Beach itself is a restful and quiet area that is ideal for those in need of deep rest and relaxation.

Lamai Beach

Lsmai Beach itself is quieter than Chewang and has fewer water sport and other activities and much less development too. Lamai Beach is well known for its unusual rock formations of Grandfather and Grandmother rocks that resemble certain parts of the male and female human anatomy. These never fail to raise a laugh amongst the visiting tourists.

Backpacker Samui

Samui hasn’t completely forgotten its backpacker roots and still caters to the buget traveller mainly at Maenam beach. The beach itself is not the most attractive being narrow and course but the surrounding area offers the least expensive of the island’s accommodation.

Bohut

Up and coming Bohut is similar to Maenam but caters for both the younger and older traveller as well as families; it has a French-like quality. The old village is now tagged “Fisherman’s Village” and caters for its clientele very well with a sprinkling of supermarkets, Internet cafes, as well as the plethora of ATMs and a bank or two.

Bohut's night life is less boisterous than Chaweng or Lamai and is perfect for old fashioned ‘promenading’. The nice thing about Bohut is that although being colonised by high end developments the place has made an effort to retain many of its wooden shop houses that exist cheek-by-jowl with upmarket restaurants and low-key beer bars.

West and South Coasts

The island has a more quiet and reserved side too. Mainly concentrated on the west and south coasts are some small and charming coves with peaceful accommodation that are most easily reached by hiring a motorcycle or a four-wheel drive.

To reach this part of the island may need an extra effort but for those who spurn the sometimes raucous nightlife of Chaweng and Lamai beaches then small villages, picture-perfect coves and beaches and some of the island’s quieter hotels and guest houses are to be found here.

Spas

Samui is a haven for spa lovers all of the quality hotels and resorts have excellent spas, there are numerous independent spas too, all of which offer a variety of treatments to sooth away the cares and worries and to ease the strain of life.

Butterlfies

The Samui Butterfly Garden is a botanical treat with myriads of butterfly species helping to pollinate the plants and provide a colourful flying spectacle. Viewing points also give wonderful views over the coast line.

Coconuts and Monkeys

Samui has a monthly harvest of 3,000,000 coconuts. Now gathering those coconuts is a dangerous job only for the young, the strong hearted, the nimble and those with a head for heights. But monkeys have been doing this job for centuries, they are agile, fearless and the canopy is their natural home. The tradition of training monkeys to retrieve the fruit is being carried on at the Samui Monkey Training Centre it is possible to watch the training and to see the animals execute other tricks – the kids will love it.
