Ever wondered why Thailand attracts so many travelers and tourists? This article gives a brief introduction to some of the highlights of the South East Asian country.
Thailand is one of the top travel destinations in the world, but what exactly is it that attracts so many people to this one country? The Land of the Smiles offers something for everyone - from stunning beaches, to rural towns for the more intrepid traveller. Here is an introduction to the highlights of this amazing country.
The capital city of Bangkok – or Krung Thep as the locals call it – is a great place to start or finish any travel to Thailand. With an estimated population of around 7 million people, Bangkok is a wonderful fusion of Asian and Western cultures. From the millions of motorbikes and Tuk Tuks buzzing endlessly around the streets, to the gigantic mega-shopping centres, Bangkok offers something for everyone. You might find yourself buying from a street side vendor for breakfast, visiting the huge market of Chatuchak or wandering the grounds of an amazing temple. Bangkok is certainly worth a visit – even if big cities aren’t your thing. Bangkok is polluted and busy – but do not underestimate this thriving metropolis.
If you are after a relaxing beach holiday, Thailand holds a smorgasbord of opportunities. From Phuket to Ko Samui and Ko Phi Phi, Thailand is home to a seemingly endless selection of resorts. Travel South of Bangkok and you will be able to waste away hours and hours on the beach.
A visit to one of the Ancient cities such as Sukhothai or Ayuttahaya is definitely worthwhile whilst in Thailand. Visit the ancient temples and wander around spectacular ruins. Even if you are not intrigued by the history of these sites, you may well be impressed.
In the North of Thailand, Chiang Mai is a popular choice for travellers, many of which choose this as a base for trekking to the hill tribes. The long-neck hill tribes are a famous image of Thailand and you may be lucky enough to trek into one of their villages. Chiang Mai is a quaint town and is home to a variety of temples, museums and sites. Take the time to travel by train to this marvellous city. A pleasant change from Bangkok.
Thailand is not referred to the land of the smiles for no reason. The Thai people are one of the reasons so many people come back to the country again and again. As a westerner, you will often be greeted with a wide smile and the inquiry “Bai nai ka?” which translates to “Where do you go?” Although this might get annoying after a while, Thai’s do not mean for this to be the case and are genuinely curious and just want to talk to you. Take the time to look at Thailand not only from a tourist perspective, but also from a local perspective. The real joys of travelling will unravel when you stop for a moment and talk with someone who lives there.
The Land of the Smiles offers an endless amount of wonderful travel experiences and sights – too many to list. If travelling to the country expect to want to stay longer than you expected. Thailand is a country that offers so much more than just beautiful beaches and resorts.
